It has been a few years since I’ve been to the Regal Theatre in Minehead and my pre-Christmas trip for the Sunday afternoon matinee reminded me how much I love it. There was a buzz round the theatre, positioned proudly in the centre of town, as we approached along with streams of family groups eager for a great afternoon of entertainment. We were warmly welcomed by director Darcy-Mae Ahern who, at only 22, had taken on the mammoth task of directing this year’s pantomime offering, Sleeping Beauty.
A script by Alan Frayn is always a good foundation for any pantomime and on that strong base Darcy had built a wonderfully spectacular show. Her speciality is dancing and so it should be no surprise that there were some spectacular ensemble pieces that were a delight as colourful costumes combined with excellent lighting, enthusiastic singing, and great dance moves all underscored by a talented live band. What’s not to like?
And, in keeping with the best spirit of community theatre, there were so many people involved, with something for everyone. There were some very talented youngsters making up the Rainbow Fairies, an enormous and talented chorus, and principals of all ages. It is great for younger performers to be able to work alongside more seasoned troupers and learn from their years of experience. And, boy, are they fast learners. The younger performers were great.
This was traditional panto in every way with a few extra ingredients thrown in for good measure. So on projection we saw the Dame doing her shopping in Minehead on her way to the theatre! We had a funny schoolroom scene and a very funny sequence about sending invitations to towns all across the country. We had pyrotechnics, swirling lights, gold confetti and the most wonderful rotating tower. And the Fairy had to check her magic on her spell checker to make sure it would work! All great fun.
This was pantomime in the very capable hands of somebody who clearly has an affinity for the genre and is capable of bringing out its best aspects. It is so reassuring that the future of amateur pantomime in Somerset is safe with such talent around.
