IES's Snow White is a real audience pleaser

By Sam Allen

With Storm Darragh imminent, Government Red Alert alarms were going off all round as we took our seats at the Warehouse Theatre in Ilminster! But instead of alerting us to the storm, they should have been alerting us to the great evening’s fun we were about to experience. Ilminster Entertainment Society, under the very capable direction of Vicki Singleton, put on a wonderful, family-friendly traditional pantomime, Snow White and the People of Varying Heights.

And the packed house really loved it. Audience involvement and superb rapport throughout was a hallmark of the show. And laughter was there plenty! The gags came thick and fast and the physicality on stage was a wonderful visual feast. Add the colourful costumes, clever sets and great lighting and what we had was a delight for the eyes. And for the ears we had a variety of songs old, new and original, sung with gusto by the main characters and the chorus alike, with live musical accompaniment.

As well as some seasoned and experienced performers, it was great to see so many youngsters on the stage, not just in the chorus but rocking it in key principal roles. There is talent aplenty amongst the youth of Ilminster.

All the pantomime ingredients were there: ghost sequences, a UV scene, slapstick, knockabout and more than a touch of evil! This was a new take on an age-old story and it provided a wonderful backdrop to a show which will gladden the hearts of local audiences in the run-up to Christmas.

And we managed to get home before the storm struck!
