The warmth of our welcome at the Princess Hall in Burnham-on-Sea was only surpassed by the warmth of the rapport between the cast and the audience in this wonderful example of community theatre. The pantomime was old favourite, Aladdin, with scriptwriting credits going to the entire company. That philosophy of inclusivity and teamwork is one of the hallmarks of the society and that, combined with a willingness to welcome newcomers into the fold, helps to make it a shining example of community theatre at its very best.
This was a script with one or two unusual twists and turns although it stayed close to all the usual pantomime traditions. So we had a lot of gags, some great knockabout and slapstick complete with real slosh, a few innuendos for the adults and lots of audience interaction. They really do know how to put on a pantomime at Burnham!
In this fast-paced and slick trot through the story we enjoyed some wonderful sets and very slick scene changes all accompanied by wonderful musical links and great mood music. I knew from the off that I was really going to enjoy their choice of music as we started with a splendidly clever mash up of Kung Fu Fighting and Best Day of my Life, a great way to get the show off to a rousing start.
The splendid costumes were bright and colourful, enhanced as they were by imaginative lighting, some splendid geyser effects, projections and gold confetti that contributed to a wonderful visual treat.
But most of all I enjoyed that inclusivity at Burnham were there is a real feeling of camaraderie. Perhaps it was all best on display in the community song when the relaxed performers brought laughter and joy to the entire audience. I always enjoy visiting the Princess Theatre for their pantomimes, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit!
