For some reason, Snow White is the pantomime of choice this year with a total of five entering the Cinderella Trophy Competition. And so it was off to Somerton to see their version of this traditional pantomime tale, where we were joined by an enthusiastic and buzzing audience that crowded in to the packed Parish Rooms in the centre of this delightful and historic town.
And they were not to be disappointed with a high-energy, gag packed and fun-filled show. There was laughter aplenty as the very accomplished performers took us through all the panto favourite routines including a bit of slosh, a touch of romance, a ‘behind you’ sequence, a UV scene, and a lot of singing and dancing. That’s not to miss out on the specialities of this particular panto: the mystical magic mirror and, of course, the line-up of disparate dwarfs!
This was a show were all the traditions of pantomime were on display. There were quite a few comedy numbers and a few quirky ideas thrown in for good measure. The audience was drawn in to the fun too, with plenty of interaction and entrances and exits through the auditorium. If you can judge a good show from the reaction of the audience, then this was a good ‘un as the laughter kept a coming.
We visited when the show was well into its long run but the performers showed no signs of flagging and they kept it fresh and energetic, with the added advantage that they were all well on top of their game with no weak links.
It’s no surprise that the show was a sell-out and long may Somerton Dramatic Society continue to provide great entertainment for the good folk of their lovely town.
