Yeovil's Wizard of Oz

YAPS present The Wizard of Oz

As I continue my pantomime journey it’s time to follow that yellow brick road again but this time through the floods!

It was at Westlands Entertainment Venue that Yeovil Amateur Pantomime Society were performing The Wizard of Oz.

Authored by Paul Smith, the multi-talented Ashleigh Squibb was in the hot seat as Director.

I received an extremely warm welcome from the Chairs, Teresa and Becky, and was handed a most comprehensive and elegant programme.

The Wizard of Oz can occasionally be deemed as a show and not a ‘true’ pantomime. On this occasion the script writer and director made certain it had all the hallmarks of a traditional pantomime and much much more.  With an audience of around four hundred, they were in for a real show stopping treat, as was I.

Casting was impeccable and you could not have found a better troupe to have pulled off this production. Energy, enthusiasm and confidence lit up the stage. We were even treated to a ‘real life’ Toto (played by Molly) to set the scene.

Each principal played their part convincingly and you are to be congratulated.

It’s impossible to mention everyone but praise must be given to Dorothy (Leah Driver) for portraying this character perfectly.

I was impressed by singing, dancing and movement not only from principals but from Ensemble and junior Ensemble too. You all had a lot to learn.

Comedy was constantly in abundance thanks to the talents of Dame Betty Birdseed (Ashleigh Squibb), the Wicked Witch (Kiera Gladman) and Bertie (James Gaylard). Regretfully I am unable to offer any nominations for those jokes James. Ha!

A wonderful array of colourful costumes were society made and looked striking. The ‘quick change’ finale was a captivating moment.

All sets looked pleasing with swift and silent changes thanks to the Black gang and cast members.

Lighting and sound created mood and added depth to this pantomime thanks to the professional talents of the Westlands team.

I did just wonder however, if this production was a tad too lengthy. I may have suggested tighter script editing in places, perhaps shaving ten to fifteen minutes off the entire show.

Nonetheless, YAPS are to be proud of their panto and how fortunate the people of Yeovil are to have you at hand to brush away those winter blues.

I stand and applaud you and award each cast member their very own ‘Gold Waitrose Card’!
