Wellington Pantomime Group's Sleeping Beauty

Wellington Pantomime Group present Sleeping Beauty

Despite total mayhem on the relief road I eventually made it to the Wellesley Theatre. It was here that Wellington Pantomime Group were performing Sleeping Beauty.

The script by the ever popular Alan P. Frayn contained everything you would expect in a traditional pantomime although an ‘It’s behind you’ scene was not included.

The talented Andy Pearce was in the driving seat as director, his debut in pantomime, and what a great job he made of it too!

In terms of direction this show was a skilful presentation of the script and all principals, dancers, ensemble and junior ensemble held this show together with panache.

You had some great performers and fine vocal talent too. I absolutely loved the performance of Jen Matravers’ Fairy Lilac. Precisely how a fairy should be and wow, what a singing voice! By contrast I loved the performance of Tyler Curry’s Bad Witch Hazel. In your unique way you created your own character reminding me of Dame Edna, Christopher Biggins and Jenny Ryan (from the Chase) all rolled into one! I certainly wouldn’t want to bump into you late at night down in Rockwell Green!

Maddie David’s Princess Rose was played with merit. You projected sweetly and innocently making your character most believable.

I believe visual comedy is the essence of pantomime and it was here where you were on top form.

The timings of ‘Post Haste’ was spot on thanks to the talents of Micaela Sellick and Dawn Shepherd’s Fetch and Carry with clear signs we could all read even from the back.

Thank you for adding the ‘Birthday Cake’ scene. A panto isn’t a panto without custard pies, and the more in the face, the more marks you will score (well from me anyway!) The M&S caterpillar gag was a hoot! I loved the take on the Weakest Link even down to wearing those specs Hettie.

Beth Burrows’ Muddles gave an energetic performance while Andy Cooper’s debut as Dame provided a loveable and polite character.

Sets were all pleasing and society made. I especially loved the transformation of the forgotten room.

At times there were delays between scenes. A professional touch is to try and keep the continuity going if you can.

Nonetheless, it is clear Wellington pantomime Group continue to provide top quality entertainment for the town. With a great cast, great band, great songs and terrific society-made costumes what more could you ask for.

Many congratulations to you all!
