Strode Theatre Presents – The Wizard of Oz
The Somerset Fellowship of Drama has kindly given me Christmas and New Year off! So on the last venture before my Christmas break I follow the yellow brick road from Taunton to Street. It is here Strode Theatre are presenting The Wizard of Oz.
A friendly welcome greeted me on arrival along with a comprehensive programme and a goodie bag that could only be described as a mini Christmas hamper! Thank you.
Directed and choreographed by Dean Brammall, assisted by Lucy Nicholson and George Oliver, this production was without doubt a spectacular showcase. I was amazed by the energetic young talent you have, showing maturity well beyond their years.
As most of us are aware, The Wizard of Oz is not a traditional pantomime so it was healthy to include Aunt Em as your panto dame, an ‘it’s behind you’ scene and an audience participation number.
Acting was to an impeccable standard by all principals and dancers and junior chorus (Team A) were on top form.
All sets looked terrific and a great idea to use multi media too. Lighting, sound and stage management was achieved faultlessly making this production the show it was.
Direction was first class although I am a stickler when it comes to tradition and felt both Ariana and The Wicked Witch should never have crossed that immortal line when on stage together.
All costumes looked appealing, appropriate and worn well by everyone. Perhaps a finale dress for Aunt Em, allowing her to ‘milk it’ on her walk down would have been the cherry on the cake. All make-up was professionally applied.
Singing was exceptional too. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the talents of your MD Phoebe Petrov.
Congratulations to your puppeteer. Excellent puppetry bringing Toto to life. He was word perfect too!
This was a polished, slick and well rehearsed production that your audience enjoyed.
As so it’s ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ and I look forward to watching you ‘pull a few strings’ for your 2026 production.
