Steel Magnolias is an acclaimed play about the unbreakable bond between six Southern women in Louisiana as they navigate love,laughter and loss. Centred around a local beauty salon, the story showcases their resilience and friendship, particularly focussing on the relationship between a mother and her diabetic daughter. Because Harling wrote this play to help him come to terms with the death of his sister, the audience gets an intimate glimpse into Harling’s own life, as well as that of his sister Susan.
Originally a short story, playwright Harling shifted Steel Magnolias into play format. He also wrote the screenplay for the film 1989 starring Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton and Daryl Hannah.
