Fiddler on the Roof is about Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman in the Russian village of Anatevka around 1905, struggling to maintain his traditions as his five daughters challenge them through their choices in husbands, all set against the backdrop of growing anti-Semitism and the looming threat of forced expulsion from their homeland. The story explores universal themes of tradition versus change, faith, family, identity, love, and survival as Tevye balances his devout beliefs with the modern world and his children's desires.
